“As the weather begins to warm, both experienced and non-experienced boaters need to be forewarned about the extremely dangerous practice of boating under the influence,” said Troy Slaten, a CA-based DUI attorney. A blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.10% or higher leaves the operator of a water vessel 10 times more likely to have an open-waters accident than a seaman that is sober. In fact, reports indicate that about 34% of fatalities from boat accidents happen at the hands of a person who was boating under the influence.”

Cities recognizing the Opening Day of boating season typically hold events in April and May; boating season officially began in Chicago on April 6, April 28 in San Francisco, and May 4 in Seattle.
